Anthropic Revolutionizes AI Development with Claude Sonnet 5

In a significant move to democratize access to powerful AI models, Anthropic has unveiled Claude Sonnet 5, a more potent and agentic version of its midsize model.

According to Anthropic, Claude Sonnet 5 can make plans, utilize tools like browsers and terminals, and operate autonomously at a level that was previously achievable only with larger and more expensive models. This mirrors the recent statements from OpenAI and Google regarding their own releases, which emphasize the importance of agentic capability in AI models.

The introduction of Claude Sonnet 5 signifies a shift in the industry’s expectations, where the differentiator is no longer about who can perform agentic work best, but rather how cheaply and reliably it can be done without human oversight.

Claude Sonnet 5 promises performance comparable to Opus 4.8, but at a significantly lower cost. The model will be the default for free and Pro plans, and is available for all subscription tiers.

Initially, Sonnet 5 will be priced at $2 per million input tokens and $10 per million output tokens until August 31. After this period, the price will increase to $3 per million input tokens and $15 per million output tokens.

Key Features and Improvements

  • Claude Sonnet 5 demonstrates significant improvements over its predecessor, Sonnet 4.6, in agentic performance, including reasoning, tool use, software coding, and knowledge work.
  • The new model scores a 63.2% on agentic coding, compared to Opus 4.8’s 69.2% and Sonnet 4.6’s 58.1%.
  • Sonnet 5 slightly outperforms Opus 4.8 in knowledge work, particularly in solving complex problems and making subtle judgment calls.

According to Anthropic, Opus 4.8 remains the model of choice for higher accuracy on these tasks, but Sonnet 5 provides developers with lower-priced options that are of much higher quality than what was previously available.

Between Sonnet 5 and Opus 4.8, users can adjust the effort level to find the right balance of cost and performance. This flexibility is particularly valuable for developers working on projects that require a mix of cost-effectiveness and high-performance capabilities.

Safety and Reliability

Claude Sonnet 5 also showcases a lower rate of undesirable behaviors, such as cooperation with misuse and deception, making it safer to use in agentic contexts.

The model is better at refusing malicious requests and sidestepping hijack attempts in prompt-injection attacks. It also hallucinates and engages in sycophantic behavior at a lower rate than Sonnet 4.6.

However, it’s essential to note that Sonnet 5 is not on the same level as Opus 4.8 and Claude Mythos Preview in terms of misaligned behavior. Evaluations have shown that it has a much lower ability to perform dangerous cybersecurity tasks than Anthropic’s current Opus models.

Anthropic co-founder Fabian Hedin emphasizes the importance of a model that knows when to say no, highlighting the need for a balance between powerful tools and responsible AI development.
