Blue Origin’s New Glenn Rocket Explosion: A Mysterious Event

Blue Origin, the space company founded by Jeff Bezos, is facing an uncertain future after its New Glenn rocket exploded during testing last month. The incident has left the company without a clear understanding of the root cause of the explosion, and it’s still trying to determine the exact reason behind it.

In a statement on the company’s website, CEO Dave Limp wrote that the team is working tirelessly to identify and correct the root cause of the explosion. Limp stated that early analysis points to the aft section of the first stage of the rocket, but the company is still gathering extensive data from multiple camera angles and sensors to confirm the findings.

Blue Origin has been working on the New Glenn rocket for over a decade, and it was finally ready for its first launch in January 2025. The rocket was preparing to fly for the fourth time when it exploded during testing on May 28 this year. Fortunately, nobody was hurt in the explosion.

The company is under pressure to return the rocket to flight as quickly as possible because it’s one of the central players in NASA’s push to return humans to the moon before President Trump leaves office. To achieve this, Blue Origin will not only need to determine and fix what caused the explosion last month but also rebuild its launchpad in Cape Canaveral, Florida, which is the company’s only launchpad that can support the massive rocket.

Blue Origin’s employees have made quick progress on rebuilding the launchpad, and the company is doing away with the transporter-erector idea. Instead, it will use a massive crane to stand New Glenn up on the launchpad before flights. This approach will not only allow Blue Origin to return to flight sooner than expected but also increase New Glenn’s flight cadence.

Before the May explosion, Blue Origin was planning as many as 12 launches this year. The company is working hard to meet this target, and Limp praised the employees for their efforts in making quick progress on rebuilding the launchpad.

The explosion has caused significant damage to the company’s infrastructure, including the loss of a lightning tower and the large piece of equipment that moves New Glenn to the launchpad and stands it up. Nearby buildings on the site were also damaged in the blast.

Despite the challenges, Limp wrote that the company caught a lot of breaks, too, and intends to make the most of them. Some of these breaks include the fact that the on-site water tower, gas tanks, and rocket integration facility are in good shape.

Blue Origin is determined to return to flight as soon as possible and is working tirelessly to meet this goal. The company is confident that it will be able to overcome the challenges it’s facing and continue its mission to explore space.
