The Secret Ingredient: Egg Yolk

According to the study, these renowned artists may have used proteins, particularly egg yolk, in their oil paintings. The researchers discovered trace quantities of protein residue in classic oil paintings, which were previously attributed to contamination. However, the study suggests that the inclusion of protein was likely intentional, providing valuable insights into the technical knowledge of the Old Masters.
