Two Daredevils Arrested After Reaching the Top of the Empire State Building for a Proposal

On July 1, two individuals were taken into custody after they climbed to the top of the iconic Empire State Building’s antenna in New York City. The daring stunt, which took place on Wednesday, left authorities and the public alike stunned.

According to the New York Police Department, the climbers, identified as Angela Nikolau and Ivan Beerkus, unfurled a banner that read, ‘When the power of love beats the love of power the world knows peace.’ The banner was a poignant message that conveyed the couple’s desire for a world filled with love and peace.

The climbers were reportedly wearing black clothing and face coverings as they made their way to the top of the 1,454-foot spire. One of the climbers appeared to propose to the other while on a platform a little below the spire, as captured in photos and videos by WABC-TV.

Nikolau’s Instagram account features a collection of photos and videos showcasing her and Beerkus’s daring stunts at the top of various tall buildings around the world. The account identifies Nikolau as a ‘neoartist exploring identity, fear, and freedom.’ Her dream, as stated on her Instagram account, is to push the boundaries of what’s acceptable in art.

The Empire State Building’s officials released a statement emphasizing that there was never any danger to tenants and visitors at the building. However, they also acknowledged the stunt’s potential to attract others to attempt similar feats, which could ultimately lead to tragic consequences.

Former FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe expressed his concern over the stunt, stating, ‘They are going to have to do whatever they can to see that these people are prosecuted for any appropriate charges because they cannot take the chance that others will see this and also decide to try it.’ McCabe emphasized that the danger and recklessness involved in such stunts cannot be overstated.

The incident has sparked a debate over the limits of artistic expression and the need for stricter safety measures to prevent such stunts from occurring in the future. As the investigation into the incident continues, many are left wondering how the pair managed to climb to the top of the antenna and what the consequences will be for their daring stunt.

A 2024 documentary, Skywalkers: A Love Story, features Nikolau and Beerkus, showcasing their daring feats and their passion for art and love. The documentary provides a glimpse into the couple’s world, highlighting their desire to push the boundaries of what’s acceptable in art and their commitment to each other.
