UK’s Spaceport Cornwall: A New Frontier

The southwestern tip of England, specifically the remote region of Cornwall, has witnessed a remarkable transformation. A former Virgin Atlantic passenger jumbo jet, now repurposed as Cosmic Girl, has been making trial flights from Newquay Airport, signaling a new era in space exploration. This Virgin Boeing 747, affectionately known as the ‘Queen of the Skies,’ is set to launch a rocket into space next month, marking the United Kingdom’s first orbital space launch.

A Historic Moment for the UK

Cosmic Girl, the modified Boeing 747, will take off from Spaceport Cornwall, sharing the airport’s 1.7-mile regular runway. The event will be a significant milestone for the UK, marking its first orbital space launch. According to Ian Annett, deputy CEO at the UK Space Agency, this launch will also be Europe’s first satellite launch.

A New Era in Space Exploration

Cosmic Girl has been named after the company’s bid to launch seven satellites into space. The aircraft has been modified to carry LauncherOne, a California-made rocket, which will travel at up to 17,000 miles per hour as it zooms into space. The use of a 747 for a horizontal launch enables a broader range of orbits than would be possible from a traditional ground-launched system.

Virgin Orbit’s chief pilot, Matthew Stannard, expressed his excitement about bringing Cosmic Girl home to the UK, stating, ‘It feels amazing to bring Cosmic Girl home to the UK. We are weeks away now from the first UK launch at Spaceport Cornwall so it’s all very real.’

Preparations Underway

LauncherOne completed its first full launch rehearsal in Long Beach, California, on October 2. The rocket was then flown to the UK last Friday to meet Cosmic Girl, which arrived in Cornwall on October 11. The aircraft completed a nearly three-hour test flight around Cornwall and Southwest England on October 14, giving locals a glimpse of the historic moment.

Spaceport Cornwall’s head, Melissa Thorpe, commented on the significance of the event, stating, ‘Seeing the infrastructure in place makes our launch ambitions a reality.’

A Global Reach

Virgin Orbit is planning to bring horizontal launches to several international locations, including Australia, Brazil, Japan, Poland, and the Republic of Korea. This expansion aims to make space exploration more accessible and efficient, paving the way for future space-based endeavors.

A New Era in Space Exploration

The UK’s first orbital space launch marks a significant milestone in space exploration. As Virgin Orbit continues to push the boundaries of space travel, the world watches with anticipation, eager to see what the future holds for space exploration.
