The opening weekend of racing at Saratoga has seen a European raiding party sweep the turf races, leaving many in awe of their dominance.
European Powerhouses Dominate
From the Grade I Belmont Derby to the Suburban, European-trained horses have taken center stage, showcasing their impressive skills and determination. Title Role, a German-bred horse, won the Belmont Derby on Saturday, narrowly edging out West End Kid by a nose. The favorite, Remember Mamba, trailed behind, but still managed to secure a respectable third-place finish.
Phileas Fogg, a seasoned European raider, repeated his winning performance in the Suburban, taking the lead from the start and cruising to a 10-length victory. The Astern gelding has consistently shown his prowess on the track, and his latest win solidifies his position as a top contender in the turf stakes.
Irish-Bred Kensington Lane Shines in Belmont Oaks
In the Belmont Oaks, Irish-bred Kensington Lane made a stunning impression, winning the Grade I event by 1 3/4 lengths. Trained by Donnacha O’Brien, the Starspangledbanner filly took the lead early and maintained a commanding position throughout the race. Faithful Departed and Fitz Right trailed behind, but still managed to secure respectable second- and third-place finishes.
With this impressive win, Kensington Lane’s future plans are now being reassessed, with a possible return to Europe or a longer residence in New York on the table. The options have expanded, and it remains to be seen where this talented filly will next compete.
