EU Lawmakers Demand Investigation into FIFA Boss Gianni Infantino
Dozens of European lawmakers are rallying behind a call for an investigation into FIFA boss Gianni Infantino, citing concerns over his involvement in a decision to permit US striker Folarin Balogun to play despite a red card.
The controversy began when Balogun was shown a red card during the US victory over Bosnia-Herzegovina on July 1. According to standard FIFA rules, this would have made him ineligible to play in the team’s next game. However, in a surprising move, FIFA lifted his suspension for a match on Monday after US President Donald Trump intervened with Infantino on behalf of the 25-year-old striker.
European Parliament lawmakers Barry Andrews, Lara Wolters, and Niels Fuglsang have expressed their outrage over the situation, describing it as a ‘disgrace and a perversion of justice.’ In a joint statement, they accused FIFA of ‘surrendering to the demands of the Trump administration’ and called for an investigation into Infantino’s actions.
The lawmakers have also raised concerns over the potential breach of political neutrality, citing the fact that Trump was awarded the FIFA Peace Prize, which they see as a clear example of FIFA’s willingness to bend its rules to accommodate powerful politicians.
The call for an investigation has gained significant traction, with 35 lawmakers so far signing the letter. They are urging the national football associations of EU countries to pressure the FIFA Ethics Committee to take action against Infantino and to investigate whether pressure from the Trump administration played a role in the lifting of Balogun’s suspension.
According to FIFA, the decision to lift Balogun’s suspension was made by a disciplinary committee, but the European lawmakers are not convinced. They argue that Infantino’s involvement in the decision is a clear example of how FIFA is willing to compromise its integrity to accommodate powerful interests.
In a statement, the lawmakers said, ‘The beauty of sport is that it is based on impartial and transparent rules. When Infantino allows political pressure to determine who gets to play, this sense of fairness goes out the window.’
The controversy has sparked a heated debate over the role of politics in sports and the need for greater transparency and accountability in international football governing bodies.
