Xbox’s Post-Layoff Game Pass Lineup: A Glimpse into the Future

Following the recent mass layoffs that swept through the Xbox business, Microsoft has finally made its first announcement regarding the July lineup of games for Game Pass. This move comes as a response to the uncertain future of the gaming platform, which has been struggling to meet its projected subscriber goals.

According to a recent statement from CEO Asha Sharma, the company had expected Game Pass subscriptions to hit around 77 million this year, but it currently has only about 30 million. Furthermore, Microsoft had hoped for 100 million subscribers by 2030, which now seems highly unlikely.

Sharma acknowledged that Microsoft’s gaming strategy had failed, citing the high cost structure and smaller install base as key factors contributing to this failure. The company’s decision to invest in Game Pass, multi-platform, and a broader portfolio of content did not yield the desired results, leading to a weakened core business and additional investments.

As the industry faces its most severe hardware crisis in history, Microsoft is now forced to reset its Xbox strategy. Despite the challenges, the company has announced a list of games that will be available on Game Pass throughout the first half of this month.

Some of the notable titles include Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1+ 2, The Planet Crafter, Palworld 1.0, and several others. Here’s a breakdown of the games that will be added to Game Pass:

The lack of any mention of the cuts or studio exits in Microsoft’s Xbox Wire post announcing the Game Pass lineup is a telling sign of the company’s efforts to maintain a positive image amidst the recent layoffs and restructuring.
