Pakistani Forces Launch Decisive Operations Against Separatist Group
In a major crackdown against separatist forces, Pakistani security forces have killed 75 insurgents in operations against the outlawed Baloch Liberation Army (BLA) in the restive Balochistan province. The operations, which involved the army, Frontier Corps, and police, were carried out after a wave of attacks on troops, police, and civilians in the region.
The announcement of the operations came a day after Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif visited Balochistan’s capital, Quetta, and met with the families of 42 people killed in the attacks. During the meeting, the Prime Minister assured the families that the sacrifices of their loved ones would not be in vain and that those responsible for the attacks would be brought to justice.
According to officials, the operations began late Monday after dozens of fighters from the BLA attacked a police post near Mangi Dam, which supplies water to millions of people in Quetta and surrounding areas. The attack resulted in the deaths of 9 police officers and 15 attackers, while 18 police officers were abducted by the insurgents and later found blindfolded and shot dead after fleeing into nearby mountains.
The BLA is a separatist group that has been fighting for greater autonomy or independence for the Baloch people in Balochistan. The group has been accused of receiving support from India, a claim that has been denied by the Indian government. Pakistan has also accused both the BLA and the Pakistani Taliban of having sanctuaries in Afghanistan.
The government has approved compensation of 11.1 million rupees (approximately $39,000) for the families of each police officer killed in the attacks. The compensation is seen as a gesture of goodwill towards the families of the victims and a commitment to providing justice for those responsible for the attacks.
Balochistan, Pakistan’s largest but least populous province, has long faced a separatist insurgency led by ethnic Baloch groups seeking greater autonomy or independence. The province has also seen attacks by the TTP, which is separate from but allied with the Afghan Taliban.
The recent wave of attacks has raised concerns that separatist groups once considered relatively small are expanding their reach. The government has vowed to take decisive action against the BLA and other separatist groups to maintain law and order in the region.
