2026 Scottish Open Update: McIlroy, Smith, and Kim Share Lead
Rory McIlroy, the world’s second-ranked golfer, has once again asserted his dominance at the 2026 Scottish Open. McIlroy, who won the Scottish Open in 2023 and finished runner-up the previous year, has taken a share of the lead at 9 under par heading into the weekend at The Renaissance Club.
McIlroy’s impressive start to the tournament saw him make four birdies in his first eight holes, quickly reaching 9 under par. However, he couldn’t maintain his momentum on the back nine, treading water with one birdie and one bogey to stay tied for the lead alongside Jordan Smith and Tom Kim.
Smith, an Englishman competing in his first full year on the PGA Tour, fired a 7-under 63 in the morning to take the low round of the week and thrust himself to the top of the leaderboard. Kim, a strong contender in this event, has started to turn a corner with his game and is a threat, given his history in this event and on links courses.
Weekend Contenders
McIlroy will face stiff competition from a number of challengers, including Chris Gotterup, who won last week’s event, and Robert MacIntyre, the hometown favorite and 2024 champion. Gotterup is riding high after his recent win, while MacIntyre is always a force to be reckoned with on his home course.
Other notable players in the hunt include Matt Fitzpatrick, who continues to play stellar golf, and Min Woo Lee, who joined Fitzpatrick one back of the leaders thanks to a red-hot back nine. Wyndham Clark, the U.S. Open champion, is also a threat, given his recent run of play.
Notable Players Who Missed the Cut
A number of top players will be making an early exit from North Berwick, including Scottie Scheffler, Brooks Koepka, and Shane Lowry. Scheffler, the world’s number one golfer, shot a 2-over 72 on Friday to drop to even par and miss the cut, snapping his streak of playing the weekend in 78 straight tournaments.
While Scheffler is left wondering what went wrong this week, McIlroy will spend another weekend vying for victory along the Scottish coast. McIlroy has played sparingly this summer, opting to focus on preparing for The Open rather than competing in the Travelers.
For McIlroy to take home his second Scottish Open title and PGA Tour victory number 31, he’ll have to fend off a number of challengers. The weekend will be a thrilling conclusion to the 2026 Scottish Open, with McIlroy, Smith, Kim, and a number of other contenders vying for the top spot.
