Disney’s highly anticipated live-action remake, ‘Moana,’ has faced a major setback at the box office. Despite its promising storyline and impressive cast, the film has failed to impress audiences worldwide, particularly in its international debut. According to recent box office reports, ‘Moana’ has managed to rake in a mere $52 million in overseas markets, a far cry from the projected $75 million launch.

The film’s poor performance can be attributed to its weak start in key territories, including Australia, France, and Korea. While it did reasonably well in these markets, earning $5.3 million, $5.2 million, and $3.8 million respectively, it bombed in China with a paltry $1.2 million. This underwhelming response has left many questioning the film’s potential for success.

On the other hand, ‘Toy Story 5,’ a Disney and Pixar collaboration, continues to shine at the box office. In its fourth weekend, the film raked in a substantial $45 million from 50 markets worldwide, bringing its global earnings to a staggering $879.1 million. This impressive figure is a testament to the enduring popularity of the beloved ‘Toy Story’ franchise.

Another notable release, ‘Minions and Monsters,’ added $39 million to its global tally in its second outing, although its performance was slightly marred by a 44% drop in international debut earnings. Despite this, the film is still expected to turn a profit for Universal Studios, given its modest production budget of $85 million.

Meanwhile, ‘Evil Dead Burn,’ a horror film, struggled to make an impact in its international launch, earning a meager $13.3 million. Although it performed relatively well in India, the UK, and Mexico, the film’s overall performance was lackluster, especially considering its production budget of $20 million.

However, ‘Michael,’ a biopic, has managed to achieve a significant milestone, surpassing the $1 billion mark at the global box office. This achievement makes it the second film of 2026 and the first biopic ever to reach this coveted milestone, solidifying its place in cinematic history.

As the box office continues to witness a plethora of new releases, one thing is clear: only the most compelling stories and exceptional production values will stand a chance at success. With the competition heating up, it remains to be seen which films will emerge as the frontrunners in the coming weeks.
