Joint Military Logistics Drill: A Show of Strength and Unity

The United States and South Korea have kicked off their largest-ever joint military logistics field exercise, dubbed the 2026 Combined Joint Sustainment Training (CJST). This biennial drill, organized by the Korea-U.S. Combined Forces Command, is a testament to the unwavering commitment of the two allies to maintaining regional stability and security.

The CJST, which began on Monday and will run through Thursday, involves over 4,400 troops and 600 pieces of equipment. The exercise is being held in and around the southeastern coastal city of Pohang and the northern county of Hongcheon. According to the Combined Forces Command, the drill will include naval vessels and aircraft, with over 2,400 South Korean soldiers and 2,000 U.S. soldiers participating.

A Comprehensive Exercise

The CJST is a comprehensive exercise that aims to maximize the full-domain sustainment capabilities of the two militaries across land, sea, and air. The drill includes a range of activities, such as the Dragon Lift medical evacuation exercise, which simulates transporting injured personnel in a mass casualty scenario. Medical personnel from both militaries will perform emergency triage and treatment before transporting patients by helicopter, train, and C-130 aircraft.

The allies will also practice unloading equipment and supplies from ships when port facilities are unavailable. This exercise will mark the first use of South Korea’s joint logistics-over-the-shore system to receive U.S. cargo, testing interoperability between the two militaries. As Maj. Gen. Frederick Crist, deputy director for logistics at Combined Forces Command, stated, ‘In a crisis, we cannot assume the ports will be there when we need them.’

The training will also focus on strengthening protection measures for logistics hubs against evolving battlefield threats, such as hostile drone attacks. This exercise demonstrates the allies’ ability to move combat power across an open beach and showcases the interoperability between the two militaries.

Rising Tensions on the Korean Peninsula

The CJST comes at a time when tensions on the Korean Peninsula remain elevated. North Korea continues to strengthen its military posture and expand its nuclear forces while maintaining a hard-line stance toward Seoul. Leader Kim Jong Un has declared South Korea a ‘hostile state,’ and Pyongyang has long condemned U.S.-South Korea joint military drills as rehearsals for invasion. The alliance between the U.S. and South Korea serves as justification for North Korea’s nuclear weapons program.

As the CJST demonstrates the strength and unity of the U.S. and South Korea, it also serves as a reminder of the importance of maintaining regional stability and security in the face of rising tensions.
