Founded in 2021, Self Inspection has spent the last few years developing a platform that enables users to assess body damage on a car using as little technology as a smartphone camera. The startup has already completed over 1 million vehicle inspections for rental fleets, automotive finance companies, auctions, and marketplaces.
Stellantis’ financial services arm is one of Self Inspection’s key customers, using the platform for corporate-owned vehicles and lease-end inspections. The company’s software guides users through the process, ensuring that the entire car is covered, and the photos are compared to Self Inspection’s vast dataset of damaged vehicles to detect the presence and severity of any damage.
According to Constantine Yaremtso, CEO of Self Inspection, the company’s platform delivers a fully detailed PDF report that would normally only be obtained from a body shop. The report includes labor estimates, repair costs, and required parts.
Self Inspection’s platform has already helped its customers reduce costs by over $80 million and save more than 300,000 operational hours. The startup plans to use the new funding to build more products, reach more enterprise customers, and expand to Europe.
The funding round was led by Sandberg’s family office, Sandberg Bernthal Venture Partners, with strategic investment from tire distributor U.S. AutoForce and automotive lender Westlake Financial. Early-stage funds Costanoa Ventures, Rebellion Ventures, and BrightCap Ventures also invested in the company.
Self Inspection is not the only startup trying to modernize the automotive industry using AI. Other companies like Toma and Flai are improving dealership communication with voice agents, while BidBus is making it possible for dealerships to competitively bid on privately-owned cars. UVeye, on the other hand, is taking a more infrastructure-level approach to modernizing vehicle inspections.
The simplicity of Self Inspection’s approach is a key part of its pitch. By leveraging the fact that everyone has a good camera and knows how to capture photos, the company is able to provide a cost-effective and efficient solution for vehicle inspections.
Sheryl Sandberg believes that Self Inspection has the potential to build the system of record that the automotive industry needs.
