Netflix Sets Sights on Brazilian Literature with ‘Happy Old Year’ Adaptation

In a significant move, Netflix has announced plans to adapt the Brazilian literary classic ‘Happy Old Year’ (original Portuguese title: Feliz Ano Velho) into a series. Written by Marcelo Rubens Paiva, the novel has been considered a foundational story in the canon of late 20th-century Brazilian literature since its first publication in 1982.

‘Happy Old Year’ is an autobiographical novel centered on a dramatic turning point in Paiva’s life, where he was left tetraplegic at the age of 20 following an accident. The story challenges stereotypes surrounding disability while exploring universal themes of youth and coming of age.

Paiva’s work has already been adapted into a play, a musical, and an opera, cementing his status as a versatile and innovative writer. The upcoming series adaptation is a testament to Netflix’s commitment to showcasing diverse and critically acclaimed stories from around the world.

‘Happy Old Year’ will be produced by Amaia Filmes and City of God label O2 Filmes, in collaboration with Netflix. The streaming giant is expected to make the official announcement during the ongoing FLIP literary festival in Paraty, Brazil.
