The Tigers’ Tarik Skubal Trade Rumors Heat Up as Deadline Looms

As the trade deadline approaches, speculation surrounding the potential trade of two-time American League Cy Young winner Tarik Skubal is reaching a fever pitch. With just a week to go before the August 3 deadline, the Tigers are facing an increasingly difficult decision about whether to trade their ace pitcher.

The rumors surrounding Skubal’s potential trade have been swirling for months, with the possibility of a blockbuster deal hanging over the baseball world since the beginning of last offseason. With Skubal set to hit free agency after the 2026 season and an extension with the Tigers seemingly unlikely, the rumor mill has been churning. But then something changed. The Tigers awoke from their slumber, buoyed in part by Skubal’s return from elbow surgery on June 13. Over the course of 28 days, the team went 28-16, moving to within 3 ½ games of a playoff spot. It was a remarkable turnaround, and one that raised hopes that the Tigers might yet make a push for the postseason.

However, since then, the Tigers have lost three in a row, and their deficit has increased to four games. The trade deadline is looming, and the reality is staring the team in the face. According to SportsLine, the Tigers have a 17.3% chance of making the playoffs. While the American League is more open than the National League, with a glut of mediocrity and the top two teams – the Rays and Yankees – not appearing to be as dominant as the Dodgers and Brewers on the other side of the bracket, the chances of the Tigers making a run to the World Series are slim.

So, what are the Tigers to do? They are reportedly open to trading Skubal as long as they get a controllable MLB starting pitcher back in return, a move that could get them right back in the race next year. It feels like the most likely route at this juncture, with the Tigers willing to cut their losses with Skubal and get a package of players in return. They were already going to have to replace Skubal in the 2027 rotation; why not start now, rather than lose him for practically nothing this winter?

But there is still a glimmer of hope for the Tigers. They have five games left before the deadline, and if they win all five, would they hold onto Skubal? The schedule is workable, with two games left in their series against the Orioles, both pitching matchups favoring the Tigers, notably Skubal vs. Trevor Rogers on Wednesday. Then there’s a three-game series in Sacramento against the A’s, who have been terrible for weeks.

Almost every team in contention could use Skubal in their rotation, and the sweepstakes for his services will be hot if Detroit goes that route. If not, the price for the other starters on the market, including the Mets’ Freddy Peralta and Angels’ Reid Detmers, will skyrocket. The Tigers have five games and six days to figure it out.
