Prague Zoo’s Innovative Solution to Beat the Heat
In the midst of a scorching European summer, Prague Zoo has taken a unique approach to help its animals stay cool. As temperatures soared to record-breaking highs, the zookeepers decided to provide tons of ice to its residents, giving them a much-needed relief from the extreme heat.
The polar bears, Aleut and Gregor, were among the first to enjoy the ice treats. Born in Nuremberg, Germany, 16 years ago, the twins have adapted to the European climate but still require special care during the hot summer months. ‘The bears cool off with it and at the same time it’s an enrichment of their life in the zoo,’ said zoo spokesperson Filip Mašek.
A Brief History of Ice Treats at Prague Zoo
The idea of providing ice to the animals was first introduced two years ago in response to climate change and the increasing number of days with extreme temperatures. The zoo began ordering ice for the animals in July and August, which are traditionally the hottest months. However, this year’s heatwave struck earlier than expected, with the Czech Republic experiencing its hottest day ever on June 28, with temperatures reaching 41.9°C (107.4°F).
Mašek noted that the weather has been unpredictable, with the zoo experiencing its hottest day ever in June. ‘The weather keeps surprising us,’ he said. ‘We’ve been taught a lesson.’ The zoo plans to order ice earlier next year to ensure that the animals stay cool throughout the summer.
