Deebo Samuel and the 49ers Reunite
Deebo Samuel, the versatile and talented wide receiver, is rejoining the San Francisco 49ers. According to ESPN and NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, Samuel has agreed to a one-year contract worth $7 million. This deal brings Samuel back to the team that drafted him in the second round of the 2019 NFL Draft.
Samuel, now 30 years old, spent the first six years of his career with the 49ers. During his time with the team, he showcased his exceptional skills, particularly in 2021, when he achieved 1,405 receiving yards, 365 rushing yards, and 14 total touchdowns. This impressive performance earned him All-Pro and Pro Bowl honors. Samuel was also a key contributor to two NFC Championship-winning teams during his tenure in San Francisco.
After leaving the 49ers, Samuel joined the Washington Commanders in 2023. In his first season with the team, he caught 72 passes, his most since 2021, for 727 yards and five touchdowns. He led Washington in all three categories, solidifying his position as a reliable receiver. Samuel’s return to the Bay Area comes as the 49ers are dealing with multiple injuries in their receiving corps.
The 49ers are facing a challenging situation with their wide receivers. Ricky Pearsall, a 2024 first-round pick, is struggling with knee swelling related to the PCL injury he sustained last year. He has appeared in just 20 of a possible 32 regular-season games since joining the team. Christian Kirk, acquired this offseason, suffered a calf injury on the opening day of training camp. This has left the 49ers with limited options at the receiver position.
The team is currently relying on free-agent signing Mike Evans and second-round rookie De’Zhaun Stribling as their top wide receivers. Veteran Demarcus Robinson would likely be next in line. However, with Samuel’s return, the 49ers are likely to adjust their roster and potentially move Evans or Stribling to different positions.
Samuel is expected to slide into the ‘Z’ receiver spot for the 49ers, where he thrived during his time in San Francisco. Although he won’t handle as heavy a workload as he did during his prior stint with the team, he showed last year that he can still bring value as a yards-after-catch receiver. Coach Kyle Shanahan has also lined him up in the backfield plenty, showcasing his versatility.
