Juliette Lewis Talks ‘Cape Fear’ Series, Crystal Cady’s Complexity, and the Show’s Twists

In a recent conversation with Deadline, Oscar-nominated actress Juliette Lewis discussed her role as Crystal Cady in Apple TV’s ‘Cape Fear’ series, a character that adds a new layer of complexity to the story.

Cape Fear, a series based on John D. MacDonald’s 1957 novel The Executioners, follows the story of Max Cady, a sociopathic killer, and his sister Crystal, a mentally disturbed individual. The series, which is now available to stream on Apple TV+, marks Lewis’s return to the title 35 years after her breakout performance as Danielle Bowden in the 1991 feature adaptation of the novel.

According to Lewis, the character of Crystal Cady was a deeply written and complex role, one that she was excited to take on. ‘But that was what was exciting, is that me coming back would be in a character that goes toe-to-toe with Max Cady, with our new Max Cady, and that they have this deep history, where you don’t know who the lion is and who the mouse is at any given time,’ Lewis explained.

Lewis praised series creator Nick Antosca for giving her ‘so much to play’ as Crystal, a character that is both mentally disturbed and fascinating. ‘She really gets under his skin and vice versa,’ Lewis added.

The series, which features Javier Bardem as Max Cady and Amy Adams as Anna Bowden, has received critical acclaim for its complex characters and twists. Lewis, who has worked with Antosca on Hulu’s The Act, was thrilled to have the opportunity to return to the title and play a character that is both complex and fascinating.

Lewis also spoke about the experience of working with Martin Scorsese, who executive produces the series along with Steven Spielberg. ‘It’s a piece of my history and my career. It’s sort of my birthplace. It’s like my creative origin story is Cape Fear,’ Lewis explained.

Scorsese, who validated Lewis’s early work and encouraged her to take risks, has been a significant influence on Lewis’s career. ‘He validated me early on when I was an introvert and I had no articulation of my process, but I had a very strong point of view and instincts,’ Lewis said.

The series, which has been praised for its complex characters and twists, has also been a significant milestone in Lewis’s career. ‘It’s a piece of my history and my career. It’s sort of my birthplace. It’s like my creative origin story is Cape Fear,’ Lewis explained.
