Baseball’s Unwritten Rules Collide in a Perfect Storm
Baseball’s unwritten rules have long been a topic of discussion among fans and players alike. However, on Sunday afternoon, these rules were put to the test at Progressive Field in a dramatic fashion.
It all started in the top of the sixth inning, when Arizona Diamondbacks utility man Tim Tawa attempted to bunt for a base hit with Cleveland Guardians ace Gavin Williams working on a perfect game. The bunt attempt went foul, and catcher Patrick Bailey took off his mask and had words with Tawa. Shortstop Brayan Rocchio also expressed his displeasure from the shortstop position.
The tension was palpable as the game continued, but Tawa was not deterred. He lined a legitimate single to right field on the very next pitch, ending Williams’ perfect game bid. A few minutes later, the game went into a rain delay, and as the grounds crew put the tarp on the field, third base coach Rouglas Odor had words with Tawa. The situation escalated to the point where the benches cleared.
Williams, who did not say anything to Tawa on the field, remained calm and collected after the game. ‘I don’t really have any reaction. It is what it is,’ he said. ‘I don’t really care. My job is to get outs, and that’s what I’m trying to do.’
However, not everyone was as understanding. Guardians manager Terry Francona expressed his frustration with Tawa’s bunt attempt. ‘I think it’s a little surprising, especially in a situation like that,’ he said. ‘But you know, it’s a tough call. You’ve got to make a decision, and you’ve got to live with it.’
The Diamondbacks’ manager, Torey Lovullo, took a more nuanced view of the situation. ‘I’m totally fine with him bunting in the sixth inning of a game,’ he said. ‘It’s either black or white for me. I don’t like gray stuff. (Tawa) asked if he could bunt. We all checked off on it, said absolutely. And they clearly took exception to that.’
The brawl that ensued was a typical baseball brawl, with no punches thrown but plenty of yelling and mild pushing and shoving. It’s unlikely that anything will rise to the level of a suspension.
The game ultimately went on to be a shutout victory for the Guardians, with Williams pitching 5 ⅔ innings, striking out 10, and giving up just the Tawa single. This was his fifth straight double-digit strikeout game and his eighth overall this year, second only to Jacob Misiorowski’s 11. The last pitcher with five straight double-digit strikeout games was Shohei Ohtani in 2022, who achieved six straight.
As for the standings, the Guardians improved to 57-56, placing them in the third AL wild-card spot, three games behind the Chicago White Sox in the AL Central. The Diamondbacks, meanwhile, are 59-53 and in the NL’s second wild-card spot, with a slim one-game lead on a postseason berth.
