Breakthrough in Narcolepsy Treatment

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has made a significant step forward in the treatment of narcolepsy type 1, a rare and lifelong neuropsychiatric sleep disorder, by approving a new drug called Orzeyful (oveporexton).

Narcolepsy type 1 is characterized by the loss of brain cells that produce orexin, a chemical messenger that controls wakefulness, sleep, and muscle tone. This leads to a range of symptoms, including excessive daytime sleepiness, cataplexy (sudden muscle weakness caused by strong emotions), sleep paralysis, disrupted nighttime sleep, and hallucinations at the edge of sleep or waking.

Orzeyful is the first drug to directly target the loss of orexin signaling that causes narcolepsy type 1. By activating the same brain receptor that naturally produced orexin would stimulate, the medicine addresses the underlying biology of the disease, treating narcolepsy type 1 as a whole.

According to Tiffany Farchione, director of the division of psychiatry in the FDA’s Center for Drug Evaluation and Research, ‘For too long, people with narcolepsy type 1 have had to manage a complex, lifelong neuropsychiatric disorder with treatments that only address pieces of it. This new drug is the first medicine that impacts the underlying biology of the disease, treating narcolepsy type 1 as a whole.’

The approval of Orzeyful for this purpose was granted to Takeda Pharmaceuticals America. The medicine is taken as an oral tablet twice daily.
