The match, which was delayed due to lightning in Mexico City, saw Julian Quinones and Raul Jimenez each score against Ecuador in the first half. Quinones’ first goal came in the 22nd minute after Roberto Alvarado triggered the play with a chip over the Ecuadorian defense. Quinones tapped the ball ahead, dribbled into the box, and finished the play with a shot into the near-post netting, beating goalie Hernan Galindez.
Quinones’ assist less than 10 minutes later proved to be crucial in securing the second score. He received a pass at the top of the Ecuador box and used his second touch to find Jimenez, who booted a 16-yard shot past a diving Galindez in the 31st minute.
The Mexicans outshot Ecuador 15-7 in their first knockout stage win since 1986. Despite Ecuador holding a 57% to 43% advantage in possession and edging the hosts 410-316 in passes, Mexico’s determination and skill ultimately led to their victory.
With this win, Mexico advances to the Round of 16, where they will meet No. 4 England or the No. 41 DR Congo. The winner will then face No. 5 Brazil or Norway in the quarterfinals, with No. 2 Argentina being the favorite to meet the winner of that quarterfinal in a semifinal.
