Competing with Desktop AI Agents

The launch of Gemini Spark on Mac allows the company to better compete with other desktop AI agents, such as Claude Desktop, Microsoft’s Copilot, and OpenClaw. By enabling users to work with files on their computer and handle remote tasks, Google is positioning Gemini Spark as a more comprehensive and powerful AI assistant.

While the ability to assign multi-step tasks to Spark on phones is not available at launch, Google promises that users will soon be able to perform complex tasks, such as calling up the desktop agent to pull information from a file on their Mac.

Users can currently utilize Spark to sort and organize files, use files on their computer as the source for a new Google Workspace doc or spreadsheet, or even turn invoices into budgeting worksheets.

Expanding Integration with Third-Party Apps

Google has also expanded the integration of Gemini Spark with third-party apps, including Canva, Dropbox, Instacart, OpenTable, and Zillow Rentals. This allows Spark to perform a range of tasks, such as reserving tables, ordering weekly groceries, designing flyers, or booking apartment tours.

In addition to these new integrations, Gemini Spark can now track topics and react to events in real-time, improving its performance for tasks that involve tracking sports scores, stock movements, or breaking news.

Furthermore, Google is rolling out support for custom Model Context Protocol (MCP), which will enable users to connect their favorite apps directly into Spark to build an assistant tailored to their needs.

Availability and Future Plans

Gemini Spark for macOS (beta) is currently available only to Google AI Ultra subscribers in the U.S. However, the company plans to expand its availability in the future.

In the meantime, users can take advantage of the new features and tools offered by Gemini Spark, including its ability to sort and organize files, use files as the source for new Google Workspace documents, or even turn invoices into budgeting worksheets.
