Warhammer Blood Bowl Video Game Franchise Saved from Nacon Collapse by New Publisher Slitherine
The fate of the Warhammer Blood Bowl video game franchise has been secured after the collapse of Nacon, the French video game publisher and developer that acquired the license to develop the game in 2023. Slitherine, the publisher behind the successful Warhammer 40,000: Battlesector, has taken over the rights to the game, including the back catalog, from Nacon’s assets.
Nacon filed for insolvency in February, citing the failure of its majority shareholder, Bigben Interactive, to make a loan repayment. The company was home to 16 development studios and a publishing arm at the time, and its collapse raised concerns about the future of several games, including GreedFall 2, Hell is Us, RoboCop, and Test Drive Unlimited.
Blood Bowl 3, the latest installment in the series, received a mixed user review rating on Steam and failed to meet fan expectations when it launched in 2023. IGN’s review of the game gave it a score of 5/10, stating that it was a ‘sloppy, muddy, buggy rehash of a better game.’
However, Slitherine has expressed its commitment to reviving the franchise and working closely with Cyanide Studio, the long-time developer of the series, to create a new game that will meet the expectations of fans. The company has confirmed its intention to continue actively supporting and expanding the Blood Bowl video game with a strong focus on community feedback, long-term development, and ongoing player engagement.
Marco Minoli, Director of Publishing at Slitherine, commented: ‘Blood Bowl is one of the most iconic and distinctive strategy franchises in videogames, and we’re genuinely honoured to help shape its future alongside Cyanide and Warhammer.’
Patrick Pligersdorffer, CEO of Cyanide, added: ‘We are delighted to partner with Slitherine to ensure the future of the Blood Bowl video games. Slitherine has proven its expertise, publishing high-quality strategy games. We believe it is a perfect match.’
Slitherine has also confirmed that it will move forward with the next Warhammer Blood Bowl game, which was previously announced by Nacon, and will provide more information about the project during the Slitherine Next Event on July 22.
With Slitherine at the helm, fans of the Warhammer Blood Bowl franchise can rest assured that the series will continue to thrive and provide the same level of excitement and entertainment that fans have come to expect.
