In a significant blow to transnational criminal organizations, the Justice Department has charged over 300 members and associates of the Tren de Aragua gang, which originated as a prison gang in Venezuela in the mid-2000s. The gang has been accused of entering the United States illegally and engaging in crimes to maintain or increase their position within the organization.

The charges against the Tren de Aragua members were brought in Illinois and Texas, with eight alleged members facing charges related to murders, kidnappings, and firearms offenses. The Justice Department has described the gang’s activities as a ‘serious threat to public safety.’

The United Cartels, on the other hand, is a notorious organization known for its manufacture and distribution of methamphetamine. The Justice Department has charged two high-ranking members of the gang with trafficking ‘immense amounts of methamphetamine into the United States and supporting a foreign terrorist organization.’

The United Cartels operates from hubs in several cities across the United States, including Dallas, Houston, Kansas City, Los Angeles, Denver, and Chicago, as well as locations in Europe and Australia. The organization’s activities have been described as a ‘significant threat to national security.’

The charges against the Tren de Aragua and United Cartels organizations are the latest in a string of efforts by the Justice Department to combat transnational criminal organizations engaging in narcoterrorism and other crimes in the United States. The Department’s actions demonstrate its commitment to protecting public safety and national security from the threat posed by these organizations.

The indictment of the Tren de Aragua members includes charges related to:

  • Multiple murders
  • Multiple kidnappings
  • Firearms offenses

The indictment of the United Cartels members includes charges related to:

  • Manufacturing and distributing methamphetamine
  • Supporting a foreign terrorist organization

The Justice Department’s efforts to combat transnational criminal organizations are ongoing, and the Department will continue to work tirelessly to disrupt and dismantle these organizations and bring those responsible to justice.
