CD Projekt Celebrates Cyberpunk 2077’s 40 Million Copies Sold

CD Projekt has announced that Cyberpunk 2077 has reached an incredible milestone of 40 million copies sold, a significant increase from the 35 million copies sold in November. This achievement marks a remarkable turnaround for the game, which faced a disastrous launch in 2020 due to its poor state on consoles.

CD Projekt spent years rebuilding trust with its fans and improving the game. Co-CEO Micha┼‚ Nowakowski expressed his excitement over the game’s success, stating that it is a testament to the developer’s ability to create high-quality, immersive stories that keep players returning for years. He also sees this as a great foundation for their upcoming projects, including the Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2 anime, which is set to release this fall.

Next-Generation Cyberpunk Projects in Development

CD Projekt is currently working on several upcoming projects in the Cyberpunk universe. One of these projects is Cyberpunk 2, which has a team of 163 people working on it as of April. While details about the game are scarce, Cyberpunk creator Mike Pondsmith has shared some insights into its development. Pondsmith admitted that he was not as involved in this project as he was in the original Cyberpunk 2077, but he has reviewed scripts and visited CD Projekt to check out the ongoing work.

Pondsmith described the new city in Cyberpunk 2 as ‘like Chicago gone wrong.’ He also mentioned that the game will feature a brand new city in addition to the Night City from Cyberpunk 2077. Pondsmith has been working closely with the environment team to ensure that the new city feels authentic and immersive.

Keanu Reeves, who played the iconic character of Johnny Silverhand in Cyberpunk 2077, expressed his interest in revisiting the role in Cyberpunk 2. Pondsmith has confirmed that he has worked out a way to make it make sense and has told Reeves to contact him. However, it is unclear when we can expect to see the game, with CD Projekt focusing on The Witcher 4 and Nowakowski suggesting that Cyberpunk 2 won’t be out until at least 2030.

Cyberpunk 2077’s Success

Cyberpunk 2077’s success is a testament to the developer’s ability to create engaging stories that keep players returning for years. The game’s 40 million copies sold mark a significant milestone in its journey, and it will be interesting to see how CD Projekt builds on this success with their upcoming projects.
