Ancient Discovery Unfolds in Western Thailand

Deep within the western region of Thailand, a groundbreaking archaeological excavation has unearthed two exquisite gold rings, dating back approximately 2,000 years. These remarkable findings were discovered at the Don Yai Thong archaeological site in Phetchaburi province, a region rich in historical and cultural significance.

The discovery was made during an ongoing dig at the site, which began in February this year. Since then, archaeologists have unearthed eight human skeletons, bronze and gold jewelry, pottery, and other artifacts, indicating a ceremonial burial of wealthy individuals or members of the upper classes.

One of the gold rings, found with human bones last week, bears an intriguing inscription. The ring features an engraving in Bhrami script, an ancient Indian writing system. According to experts, the inscription reads ‘pusarakhitasa,’ meaning ‘the one protected by Pushya.’ This zodiac sign is considered one of the most auspicious in Indian astronomy.

The second ring, discovered alongside the same skeletal remains, is a plain gold ring devoid of any patterns or engravings. Experts believe that the owner of these rings may have been a merchant from the Indian ancient caste system, Vaishyas.

The Don Yai Thong archaeological site, located approximately 130 kilometers southwest of Bangkok, was discovered early this year after residents found pieces of ancient bronze drums in a rice field. Further excavation led to the unearthing of the gold rings and other significant artifacts.

The site dates back to a late prehistoric era in Thailand, specifically the Iron Age, which spans from 1,500 to 2,500 years ago. Archaeologists expect the excavation to be complete within the next month, after which the findings will be showcased to the public.

The discovery of these ancient gold rings and the ongoing excavation at the Don Yai Thong site provide a unique glimpse into the lives of people from Thailand’s rich cultural heritage. As archaeologists continue to uncover the secrets of the past, they shed light on the history, customs, and traditions of ancient civilizations.
