The scammer had accurately spoofed their sister’s voice and referenced a local Walmart, making it a heart-stopping experience for the family.
Patrick Coughlin, a seasoned cybersecurity expert with experience at Splunk and Cisco, was shaken by the incident. He realized that the same level of sophistication that was once reserved for government agencies and Fortune 500 companies was now being leveraged against consumers. This was largely due to the availability of cheap and powerful LLMs (Large Language Models) and other generative AI tools.
The FTC reported that people collectively lost $3.5 billion to imposter scams in 2025, triple the amount in 2020. While older Americans are more likely to be targeted, research suggests that Gen Z is also highly susceptible, with 25% of Gen Z users falling for text scams.
To combat this issue, Savi Security has developed a real-time intervention tool that can detect and prevent AI-generated scams. The company has tested its AI scam detection model through a free website called Scam Wise, which has received over 50,000 submissions in just four months.
The Savi app, launched on Tuesday, offers a range of features, including live call monitoring, text and email screening, and the ability to add a live agent as a listener during suspicious conversations. The app’s fees are also unique, with a discounted annual plan that covers an entire family and has no cap on the number of users.
