Beloved Actress Joanna Pettet Passes Away at 83
Joanna Pettet, a talented actress known for her roles in iconic films and television series, has left us at the tender age of 83. Born Joanna Jane Salmon on November 16, 1942, in London, Pettet rose to fame with her captivating performances that left a lasting impact on the entertainment industry.
Her journey began at the prestigious Neighborhood Playhouse and Lincoln Center, where she honed her acting skills. Pettet’s first Broadway role came in 1961 with the comedy ‘Take Her, She’s Mine,’ directed by the renowned George Abbott and starring Art Carney and Elizabeth Ashley.
In 1964, Pettet took on the role of Tania in ‘The Chinese Prime Minister’ and later appeared in playwright Jean Kerr’s ‘Poor Richard’ alongside Alan Bates and Gene Hackman. Her on-screen chemistry with these talented actors not only showcased her versatility but also hinted at her future romantic entanglements.
Pettet’s most notable film roles include her portrayal of Kay in the 1966 adaptation of Mary McCarthy’s novel ‘The Group,’ where she played the most down-to-earth member of an affluent friend clique. In 1967, Pettet starred as Mata Bond in the James Bond parody ‘Casino Royale,’ a film that, although poorly received, remains a fascinating footnote in the Bond franchise’s history. Her subsequent appearances in notable TV series such as ‘Route 77,’ ‘The Fugitive,’ ‘Mannix,’ and ‘Knots Landing’ solidified her place in the hearts of audiences.
A private person, Pettet’s personal life was marred by tragedy. Her son, Damien Zachary Cord, passed away on July 7, 1995, and Pettet’s death coincided with the 31st anniversary of his passing. In a touching tribute, friend and former manager Pam DuBois noted that Damien had taken his mother to heaven, where she would stay with him forever.
Pettet’s relationships with actors Terrence Stamp and Alan Bates, whom she dated on and off for several years, made headlines. Their romance rekindled in 2002, and when Bates passed away the following year, he left Pettet a significant sum of £95,000 in his will.
The actress’s connection to the infamous Sharon Tate murder in 1969 added another layer to her complex and intriguing life. Pettet and actress Barbara Lewis visited Tate for lunch on the fateful day, and their poolside afternoon was recreated in Quentin Tarantino’s 2019 film ‘Once Upon a Time in Hollywood,’ with Rumer Willis portraying Pettet.
