As I recently discovered on a we-moon getaway to the Four Seasons Resort and Residences Anguilla, this type of trip is not just about having fun with friends, but also about marking significant achievements in our lives. For me, it was the launch of my first book, but it could be a promotion, a new job, or a master’s degree – the possibilities are endless.

So, what sets a we-moon apart from a typical girls’ trip? According to Joy Harden Bradford, PhD, author of Sisterhood Heals, it’s all about striking a balance between time together and time alone. ‘Having a place where everybody can retreat and have alone time is really good if that is something that the group can do,’ she advises. ‘Private sleeping quarters are important, and so are conversations about budget ahead of time.’
Planning the Perfect We-Moon
When it comes to crafting the ideal we-moon experience, there are several key considerations to keep in mind. First and foremost, separate rooms can be a game-changer. Not only do they provide a much-needed break from the constant company of others, but they also allow for some much-needed alone time to recharge and refocus.
‘Some people might say, ‘Oh, we don’t need a five-star hotel. We’re just going to be there to sleep,’ but others might be like, ‘No, I like luxury,” Dr. Bradford points out. ‘So you don’t want to wait until you get there to find out that there’s a difference in the group about that.’
Another essential aspect of planning a we-moon is scheduling alone time. This might seem counterintuitive, given the emphasis on spending time together, but trust us – it’s crucial. ‘Because I think for a lot of us, there’s so much going on in our regular life that there’s a lot of expectations for what a vacation should be,’ Dr. Bradford explains. ‘It’s the one time I get to get away,’ and so people really put a lot on it.’
That’s why it’s essential to discuss and agree on the types of activities you want to do together, as well as those that you might want to do on your own. This might include group excursions, like a private yoga session or a cooking class, but also some much-needed downtime to relax and unwind.
And then, of course, there’s the issue of new experiences. Whether it’s learning a new skill, trying a new sport, or simply exploring a new place, we-moons offer the perfect opportunity to step out of your comfort zone and try something new. As Dr. Bradford puts it, ‘Even if you fail, you can laugh it off with friends.’
Deep Conversations and Memories
But perhaps the most important aspect of a we-moon is the opportunity for deep conversations and meaningful connections with your friends. As Dr. Bradford notes, ‘Girls trips really provide a great opportunity and a great backdrop because you are away from your regular routine to maybe get into some of those things that you don’t have time to talk about later.’
So, how can you make the most of this opportunity? By setting the mood for conversations, of course. Whether it’s over a romantic dinner, a sunset view, or simply a quiet moment in your private villa, make sure to create an atmosphere that encourages openness and vulnerability.
And finally, don’t forget to make room for memories. Whether it’s a group photo shoot, a fun activity, or simply a quiet moment to reflect on your journey, a we-moon is the perfect opportunity to create lasting memories with your friends.
