David Rush, a serial Guinness World Record breaker, has made headlines once again by completing a marathon in under 6 hours while wearing an astonishing 125 T-shirts. This incredible feat was accomplished at the 2026 YMCA Famous Idaho Potato Marathon, which took place on May 16. Rush’s impressive achievement has earned him a new title, as he has officially broken the previous record of 100 T-shirts.

Rush, who holds the most concurrent Guinness World Records titles, has been involved in various record-breaking attempts over the years. His latest challenge was inspired by his previous success in setting the half-marathon version of the record with 137 T-shirts at the 2025 Famous Idaho Potato Half Marathon. In an interview, Rush shared that he felt invincible after achieving the half-marathon record and thought he could easily double it for the full marathon. However, he soon realized that pride can often come before a painful fall.

Rush spent months training for the attempt by incorporating heavy weights and thick layers of clothing into his runs. He aimed to build up his endurance and get accustomed to the weight and heat of the T-shirts. Rush’s dedication and perseverance paid off, as he successfully completed the marathon in 5 hours, 54 minutes, and 50 seconds, leaving him with only 5 minutes to spare before the Guinness World Records cut-off time of 6 hours.

Challenging Conditions and a Narrow Escape

Rush faced several challenges during the marathon, including overheating and running out of ice. At one point, he stopped at a golf course along the marathon route, where one of his support runners, Patrick, sprinted into the pro shop to beg for emergency ice. This ice was the only reason Rush didn’t end up in the hospital, as he was starting to experience severe heat exhaustion. The experience served as a stark reminder of the importance of staying hydrated and having a support system in place.

After crossing the finish line, Rush underwent a grueling process of peeling off the 125 T-shirts from his body, which he likened to an exorcism. The aftermath was far from pleasant, with his skin becoming red, raw, and crisscrossed with bloody, five-inch-long chafing marks where the bottom of the shirts had ground against his skin for six hours. Additionally, his back was indented from the constant pressure of 43 pounds of clothing.

Rush’s achievement has not only earned him a new Guinness World Record but has also raised awareness about the importance of endurance and perseverance. His story serves as a testament to the human spirit’s ability to overcome seemingly insurmountable challenges and push beyond one’s limits.

Guinness World Records has now officially confirmed Rush’s record-breaking achievement, solidifying his position as a serial record-breaker. As Rush continues to push the boundaries of what is possible, it will be exciting to see what other records he sets in the future.
