England will face Norway in Miami on Saturday, with a kick-off time of 22:00 BST. Solbakken, in an interview with BBC sports editor Dan Roan, stated that England are favourites, but not ‘big, big favourites.’

Despite England’s status as favourites, Solbakken believes that his team has more to gain from the match. He explained, ‘I think England have more pressure than us. But we also put pressure on our performance. Once the game starts, I don’t think the players think about the pressure.’

Norway’s Premier League Talent

Norway’s team boasts a plethora of Premier League talent and experience, including Arsenal’s title-winning captain Martin Odegaard and Manchester City forward Erling Haaland. The team’s impressive roster has been a major factor in their historic run to the quarter-finals.

Haaland, in particular, has been instrumental in Norway’s success, scoring seven goals during their World Cup campaign. This is the furthest Norway has gone in the World Cup since 1998, and Solbakken believes that the team’s experience and skill will be crucial in their upcoming match against England.

Solbakken also highlighted the importance of his team’s possession statistics, stating that they had 66.4% possession during their memorable win over Brazil. However, he acknowledged that this may not be the case against England, saying, ‘No, I don’t. It’s getting hotter. We have trained very lightly. We’ve not done as much hard work [in training]. We have had technical sessions but in a lower tempo.’

England’s Team and Strategy

England’s team, led by captain Harry Kane, has been in top form during the World Cup. Kane has scored six times in five games at the tournament, and Solbakken believes that the team’s experience and skill will be crucial in their upcoming match against Norway.

Solbakken also praised England’s team, stating, ‘We need to compete and defend properly. We need to concentrate on the pitch and then we can be ourselves.’ He highlighted the importance of England’s midfield, saying, ‘Jude Bellingham and Kane score from great positions. I think the most impressive [England] game came when they were better than Mexico.’

Solbakken also acknowledged the impact of England’s midfielders, stating, ‘I think [Thomas] Tuchel managed to get their best players in good position. And being match-winners like Bellingham, Kane – they have several options on the wings which means that if one doesn’t have the day, another comes in and then obviously does something good, then steady out in the middle of the park with Elliot Anderson and Declan Rice.’

Pressure and Expectations

Solbakken believes that the pressure and expectations surrounding the match will have a significant impact on the outcome. He stated, ‘I think England have more pressure than us. But we also put pressure on our performance.’

Solbakken also acknowledged the impact of the crowd, stating, ‘Thousands of Norway fans have arrived in Miami for one of the biggest football matches in the country’s history.’

Tribute to Kevin Keegan

Solbakken used his news conference to pay tribute to his former Liverpool idol Kevin Keegan, who has been diagnosed with stage four cancer. Solbakken stated, ‘My biggest regret in World Cup history is that Kevin Keegan did not score when he came on against Spain in 1982.’

He added, ‘He was my big hero. I hope Kevin is well. We had Match of the Day on the television from the late 1960s and early 1970s when it was one game on the telly, and everyone had a team they followed. My team was Liverpool and Kevin was my man. So I say hello to Kevin.’
