The picturesque hillsides of Herefordshire are bathed in a warm, golden light as the sun rises over the rolling countryside. However, this idyllic scene is soon shattered by the sound of explosions, followed by plumes of smoke and the ear-piercing screams of those in distress.

As the chaos unfolds, a group of football coaches rush to the scene to find a soldier in need of assistance. The ‘casualty’ is actually a former soldier and amputee, and the ‘first responders’ are part of an intensive, two-day training exercise designed to test their leadership skills under extreme pressure.

A Unique Approach to Coach Education
The Football Association of Wales’ (FAW) Pro Licence course has earned a reputation as the ‘Harvard of football coaching’, attracting top talent from around the world. Among the latest batch of candidates are former Arsenal midfielder and Wales captain Aaron Ramsey, ex-Chelsea and Argentina goalkeeper Willy Caballero, and Peterborough United boss Luke Williams.

The course, run in partnership with Fieri, a company founded by former military commander Matt Johns, is designed to push coaches to their limits. ‘We’re not just teaching them how to lead a team,’ Johns explains. ‘We’re teaching them how to lead under pressure, in situations where the stakes are high and the consequences of failure are severe.’
As the coaches navigate the challenges of the course, they’re joined by a team of military-trained personnel who simulate real-life scenarios, from ambushes and hostage situations to virtual battles in the world of ‘Breconia’. The goal is to test the coaches’ ability to think on their feet, make quick decisions, and lead their teams to success in the face of adversity.
Among the participants is Ella Masar, a former US international who’s 36 weeks pregnant. Despite the challenges she faces, Masar is determined to complete the course, and she’s not alone. Other coaches, including Champions League-winning ex-Chelsea and France midfielder Florent Malouda, are also pushing themselves to the limit in pursuit of excellence.
‘This course is not just about football,’ says Michael Bradley, a former United States and Roma midfielder who’s now coaching New York Red Bulls. ‘It’s about leadership, and about learning how to adapt to any situation. The FAW have done an incredible job in creating a unique and challenging environment that’s helped me grow as a coach.’
As the coaches reflect on their experiences, they’re forced to confront the harsh realities of leadership. ‘It’s not just about winning or losing,’ says Bradley. ‘It’s about how you respond to adversity, and how you lead your team through the tough times.’
For coaches like Bradley, the FAW Pro Licence course is a game-changer. It’s a chance to learn from the best, to test their limits, and to develop the skills and confidence they need to succeed at the highest level.
As the course comes to a close, the coaches are left with a newfound appreciation for the challenges of leadership. They’ve been pushed to their limits, and they’ve emerged stronger, more resilient, and more determined than ever before.
The Football Association of Wales’ Pro Licence course is a testament to the power of innovation and collaboration. By partnering with Fieri and the military, the FAW has created a unique and challenging environment that’s helping to develop the next generation of football coaches.
As the coaches depart, they’re left with a lasting impression of the course. ‘It’s not just about football,’ says Bradley. ‘It’s about leadership, and about learning how to adapt to any situation.’
With their newfound skills and confidence, these coaches are ready to take on the world. They’re leaders, and they’re here to stay.
