Revolutionizing AI Identity: Vint Cerf Joins Innovation Labs
Vint Cerf, the architect of the protocols behind the open internet, has left Google after 20 years. However, he is not done shaping the digital future. As of today, Cerf is advising Innovation Labs, an organization working on creating an open architecture for AI agents to identify themselves.
As a subsidiary of Identity Digital, a DNS registry company, Innovation Labs aims to position itself for a future where AI agents interact directly with each other, surpassing human interaction. A key roadblock has been the lack of a shared standard for identifying and auditing agents. To address this, Innovation Labs has proposed DNSid, a registry for agent identification that links each agent to an existing internet domain name and uses cryptographic proofs to log its registration over time.
Cerf believes that naming and identification are becoming increasingly important, especially in the context of AI agents. He emphasizes the need to determine what authorities AI agents have, where they have derived those authorities, and who is accountable for their behavior. This is a crucial step in establishing trust in AI systems.
Innovation Labs’ interim CEO, Allie Kline, stresses that the company’s proposal does not come with broader plans to do other kinds of AI business or own the registration data. This is a significant advantage, as many organizations are hesitant to release proprietary data. Cerf notes that the key to wide adoption of any protocol will be its functionality, and that users will drive the pressure for interoperation.
Cerf also highlights the importance of relying on users to drive the adoption of a protocol, citing the success of TCP/IP as an example. He believes that the agentic economy is not inevitable but rather a consequence of human laziness. If people find a way to have an agent do something for them, they will likely choose to do so because it is easier.
Innovation Labs is trialing the DNSid standard with several unnamed hyperscalers and identity companies. The company aims to establish a shared standard for identifying and auditing AI agents, paving the way for a future where AI agents interact directly with each other.
Cerf’s involvement in Innovation Labs marks an exciting development in the field of AI identity. His expertise and influence will undoubtedly shape the future of AI and the internet.
