MIFFest Celebrates Ninth Edition in Kuala Lumpur

The ninth Malaysia International Film Festival (MIFFest) officially opened its doors on July 18 at the MyTown Shopping Centre, marking the beginning of an eight-day extravaganza of international cinema. The festival, which has been recognized by ASEAN Records for its significant contributions to the region’s film industry, is set to showcase a diverse array of films from around the world.

The opening ceremony, attended by filmmakers, industry leaders, and stars, took place on the red carpet ahead of the evening’s program. Joanne Goh, founder and president of MIFFest, delivered the welcome address alongside this year’s festival ambassadors, Bront Palarae, Daiyan Trisha, and Jack Tan. Goh outlined the inspiration behind the festival’s 2026 theme, which is centered around the concept of ‘Resonance.’

‘Resonance is the lasting echo of a story,’ Goh explained. ‘It is the emotion that remains long after the credits roll, the conversations that continue beyond the cinema, and the connections that film creates across cultures, generations, and borders.’

The festival’s 2026 theme is closely tied to the idea of ASEAN On Screen, a platform launched in 2025 during Malaysia’s ASEAN chairship. ASEAN On Screen aims to create a lasting hub for Southeast Asian cinema, where the stories of the region can be celebrated, discovered, and shared with the world.

MIFFest’s recognition by ASEAN Records is a testament to the festival’s commitment to promoting Southeast Asian cinema and its impact on the region’s creative industry. The recognition includes the festival’s ASEAN On Screen platform and its Malaysia Golden Global Awards (MGGA) program, which have become a lasting legacy for the festival.

The ceremony also recognized the festival’s preliminary selection committee and the jury panels for the semi-final and final stages. Following the ceremony, guests moved to GSC MyTown for the world premiere of the festival’s opening film, ‘Baga: Tomorrow Belongs To No One,’ directed by Ariff Zulkarnain.

The film, which unfolds in a devout fishing community on Malaysia’s East Coast, follows two young lovers, Jani and Melur, whose plans for the future are upended by an unplanned pregnancy, poverty, and addiction. Zulkarnain drew on his own upbringing for the story, which is a powerful exploration of the challenges faced by young people in rural Malaysia.

MIFFest’s program this year includes a range of exciting strands, including Russian Film Week, presented with the Ministry of Culture of the Russian Federation, Roskino, and Mosfilm. The festival will also feature masterclasses and industry forums, providing a platform for filmmakers and industry professionals to share their expertise and connect with one another.

The festival runs through July 25, offering a unique opportunity for audiences to experience the best of international cinema and connect with the creative community in Kuala Lumpur.
