Rescue Efforts Underway in Chongqing
A massive landslide in the southwestern Chinese city of Chongqing has left at least eight people dead and 34 missing, prompting a frantic rescue operation in the face of torrential rain. The disaster occurred on Friday morning in Pengshui County, a rural area on the outskirts of Chongqing municipality, where massive amounts of rocks and soil washed down a slope, burying over 10 residential buildings, according to state broadcaster CCTV.
The landslide, which contained approximately 18,000 cubic meters of rocks and debris, was triggered by persistent rain that hit the area from Friday night to Saturday morning. The largest single rock was estimated to be around 3,000 cubic meters in size, with a total volume equivalent to roughly 106,000 cubic feet.
Rescue crews, racing against the clock, have been working tirelessly to locate survivors and retrieve those trapped under the massive boulders. The rescue operation has been hampered by the unstable weather conditions, with 19.2 centimeters of rain recorded at a weather station in the affected area.
As the rain eased slightly, rescue teams entered the site to conduct on-the-ground inspections of the collapsed buildings and riverbank areas. However, the risk of injury remains high, as teams will later need to search beneath the massive rocks, where they may risk injury if the boulders become unstable and slide.
According to CCTV, rescue teams will later drill into the boulders and fill the holes with explosives to break them apart, allowing for a more thorough search of the surrounding areas. A search dog was also deployed to the site, barking to alert a rescuer about signs of life.
The landslide occurred near a stretch of the Wujiang River, which cuts through karst mountains peppered with small towns and terraces. Pengshui County, located in the southeast part of Chongqing, borders the provinces of Hubei and Guizhou.
China’s National Development and Reform Commission has allocated a relief fund of 30 million yuan ($4.4 million) to support the restoration of infrastructure and public service facilities following the disaster. The funds will be used to assist in the relief efforts and support the affected communities.
In a related development, the Chongqing municipal government has dispatched a team of experts to the site to assist in the rescue operation and provide support to the affected families.
