Since its inception, the Solar Car Challenge has engaged over 85,000 students across 39 states and multiple countries. The event has introduced new divisions and categories to accommodate the evolving needs of participants. This year, the competition features three categories: classic, advanced, and electric-solar power, as well as a new division called cruiser, which allows teams to build four-seater vehicles with solar arrays integrated directly into the car’s body.
One of the teams participating in the competition is the Old Rip Racing solar car team from Benbrook Middle-High School in Fort Worth. The team consists of 14 members from three different schools, who have been working together for over a year to design and build their solar-powered car. Blake Wood, a 17-year-old rising senior and captain of the team, believes that the Solar Car Challenge is an excellent opportunity for students to learn about renewable energy and develop essential skills in project management, budgeting, and engineering.
Wood notes that while battery-electric vehicles have become mainstream, solar cars have remained largely experimental. However, he remains optimistic about the long-term potential of solar vehicles, citing the work of startups like Aptera, which are still pursuing the goal of a mass-market solar car.
Dr. Marks agrees that commercialization has never been the real goal of the Solar Car Challenge. Instead, the event is focused on building students who are capable, committed, and dedicated to a project.
