Pentagon Confirms US Soldier Presumed Dead in Iranian Attack on Jordan
The Pentagon has confirmed that a US soldier, identified as 28-year-old Sgt. Angel Rampersad of Ozone Park, New York, is presumed dead following an Iranian attack on a base in Jordan. This latest development brings the total US death toll to four since fighting with Iran resumed nearly two weeks ago and to 18 since the war began in late February.
The Department of Defense announced the update in a statement on Tuesday night, confirming that Sgt. Rampersad’s status had been changed from missing to ‘Duty Status-Whereabouts Unknown and is believed to be deceased.’
The Iranian attack on Muwaffaq Salti Air Base in eastern Jordan resulted in the deaths of three US soldiers, including 1st Lt. Tyler James Feehan, 25, and Pvt. Isabella Gonzales, 19, who were killed on Friday. Sgt. Rampersad was reported missing after the attack and her status was later updated to ‘Duty Status-Whereabouts Unknown.’
The Pentagon also announced that Sgt. Michael Emmanuel Swinton, 30, of Fayetteville, North Carolina, was killed on Sunday at Erbil Air Base in Iraq during a controlled detonation of a downed one-way drone. The incident marks the 11th consecutive night of US and Iranian forces trading attacks, with no diplomatic exit in sight.
Speaking to reporters during a White House press conference earlier on Tuesday, President Trump stated that the US military would soon attack Iran’s fortified underground facility in Pickaxe Mountain, where US officials suspect Iran may be housing nuclear infrastructure. The President vowed that the US would ‘hit that area pretty soon and very heavily.’
The ongoing conflict between the United States and Iran has resulted in significant financial losses, with estimates suggesting that the war has cost the US $37.5 billion so far. The conflict has also had a devastating impact on regional education, with the education minister in Lebanon stating that the sector may take up to 10-15 years to recover from the damage caused.

Rampersad as a member of the 1st Battalion, 57th Air Defense Artillery Regiment, 52nd Air Defense Artillery Brigade, 10th Army Air & Missile Defense Command in Ansbach, Germany. Local officials have also paid tribute to Sgt. Rampersad, with New York City Council Speaker Julie Menin and Council Member Joann Ariola releasing a joint statement expressing their condolences to Sgt. Rampersad’s family and loved ones.
The US and Iran have been engaged in a protracted conflict since February 28, with the latest chapter in their war beginning on July 7 over control of the Strait of Hormuz.
