Improving the Starfield Spaceflight Experience

A dedicated Starfield modder is working tirelessly to enhance one of the game’s most disappointing features: its disjointed spaceship take-off and flight sequence. Since the game’s launch in 2023, fans have longed for a smoother experience, particularly when taking off from a planet and heading into space.

While Starfield has received praise for its immersive space RPG experience, the game’s technical limitations have led to a disjointed feel, with loading screens interrupting the flow of gameplay. However, thanks to the efforts of a talented modder, the Seamless Planet Takeoffs mod is now available, aiming to remove the loading screen when taking off from a planet and spawning the player’s ship above the landing site for a seamless experience.

The mod, created by 0xBobby, is currently in beta, and as such, players can expect some bugs and imperfections. Nevertheless, the mod’s creator is working diligently to refine the experience, taking into account the atmosphere and weather of the planet. The mod’s goal is to provide a seamless transition from on-planet environment to orbit, disguising the switch as much as possible.

Footage of the mod in action reveals a first-person in-cockpit camera angle, replacing the normal third-person view of the ship taking off. While there is still a transition moment between the on-planet environment and the orbit area, the mod does an excellent job of hiding the switch, making the experience feel less disjointed than the base game.

However, a similar fix for seamless landings is a far more complex task, and 0xBobby has admitted that it is unlikely to happen. While there are technical workarounds that could be used to hide the loading through clouds or entry flames, the modder has stated that these would be more complex than the current mod and may not appeal to him.

In an effort to provide a seamless landing experience, 0xBobby would need to implement a full-fledged solution, akin to No Man’s Sky, which allows players to take off from one planet, head to space, and fly all the way to the other end of the galaxy to land somewhere else without a loading screen. This would require significant development and resources, making it a challenging task for the modder.

As Starfield continues to receive updates and expansions, fans remain hopeful that Bethesda will address the game’s technical limitations, including the disjointed spaceflight experience. However, until then, modders like 0xBobby will continue to work tirelessly to enhance the game, providing players with a more immersive and engaging experience.

Despite the challenges, the Seamless Planet Takeoffs mod is a testament to the dedication and creativity of the Starfield modding community. By working together and sharing their knowledge and expertise, modders can create experiences that exceed the base game’s capabilities, providing players with a more enjoyable and immersive experience.

With over 17 million players logging almost a billion hours to date, Starfield remains an important part of Bethesda’s future. As the company continues to expand the Settled Systems with new stories, targeted gameplay improvements, and additional updates, fans will be eagerly awaiting any developments that may address the game’s technical limitations.
