Indonesian Rescuers Search for Missing Speedboat
Indonesian rescuers are conducting an extensive search operation to locate a missing speedboat that was carrying 11 European tourists and two local crew members off the coast of Sulawesi island.
The speedboat, which departed from the Tanjung Unauna regency on Friday morning, was headed towards the Marisa Port in the neighboring Gorontalo province. However, it failed to arrive at the scheduled time, prompting concerns among the authorities.
A local tour guide reported the missing boat to the search and rescue office at 3:40 p.m. on Friday, prompting an immediate search operation. Heriyanto, the Head of the Gorontalo Province Search and Rescue Office, said that concerns arose when the speedboat had not arrived by afternoon.
‘We immediately launched a search mission overnight but until now have not found any signs of the vessel or people on board,’ Heriyanto said. The search operation is being conducted in a vast area of approximately 300 square nautical miles of waters along and around Tomini Bay, based on the tour boat’s route projections.
A thermal-imaging drone and diving equipment are being used in the search operation. Indonesia’s meteorological agency has forecasted generally clear skies in the area, but the rescuers have faced challenging sea conditions, including strong winds and waves reaching up to 2.5 meters (8 feet) high.
The speedboat was carrying a diverse group of tourists, including a Czech man, a Belgian man, five Dutch nationals, three Germans, a French woman, and two Indonesian crew members. The search operation is being conducted by dozens of search and rescue teams, who are working tirelessly to locate the missing vessel and its occupants.
