San Diego Comic Con attendees were treated to a rare public appearance by the one and only Rick Moranis on Friday, as he celebrated his latest project, ‘Spaceballs: The New One’, a sequel to his beloved 1987 film.
Moranis was joined by his co-star from the original film, Daphne Zuniga, as well as new cast members Keke Palmer and Lewis Pullman, and filmmakers Josh Gad and Josh Greenbaum. Franchise creator Mel Brooks and original star Bill Pullman also made appearances via video messages, which were displayed for the fans in attendance.
According to a synopsis for the film, the sequel takes place 40 years after the events of the first ‘Spaceballs’ and 50 years after the events of ‘Star Wars: A New Hope’. The story follows Prince Starburst, the undisciplined son of Queen Vespa, as he embarks on a mission to find Lone Starr, Yogurt, and other iconic legacy characters. The galaxy is under threat from a new and powerful enemy, one that seeks to bring back the past in a bid to gain control.
‘Somehow, Dark Helmet has returned!’ the synopsis reads. ‘Forty years after the events of the first Spaceballs, fifty years after the events of Star Wars: A New Hope, and one year after the events of The Devil Wears Prada 2, the galaxy is once again under threat. A threat so evil, so unstoppable, so completely lacking in any original ideas, that it has vowed to bring back the past… every last bit of it.’
The film’s plot thickens as it delves into the world of rebooting, where some threats can be fought, but the reboot itself is not one of them. With the Schwartz stretched thinner than a franchise releasing TV episodes theatrically, the only hope for the galaxy lies with Prince Starburst and a mysterious Palace advisor named Destiny.
When asked about the film’s release, a representative from the production team revealed that ‘Spaceballs: The New One’ is set to hit theaters next April. Fans of the original film are eagerly awaiting the sequel, and it’s clear that Moranis and his team have been working tirelessly to bring this new chapter to life.
The reunion of Moranis and Zuniga was a highlight of the event, with the two sharing a warm and nostalgic moment on stage. The chemistry between the two actors is undeniable, and it’s clear that they have a deep affection for each other and the characters they played in the original film.
The cast and crew of ‘Spaceballs: The New One’ have been working diligently to bring this new chapter to life, and it’s clear that they have a passion for the project. With its unique blend of humor, action, and heart, this sequel is sure to delight fans of the original film and newcomers alike.
