Under-Radar Dolphins Thrive on Technique, Challenge ‘Rebuild’ Label

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla., July 30 – The Miami Dolphins, once considered a high-priced track team, have undergone a significant transformation under the guidance of new head coach Jeff Hafley. After a tumultuous off-season that saw the departure of key players, including Tyreek Hill and Tua Tagovailoa, the team is now focusing on technique and fundamentals to overcome the challenges of the NFL.

Hafley, a defensive-minded coach, has emphasized the importance of minute details and team success. In contrast to previous seasons, the current roster prompts questions about who will fill key roles, and the team is embracing this uncertainty. The new coach has structured his practices to favor 11-on-11 work over 7-on-7 drills, aiming to better emulate NFL Sundays.

Players have noticed an increase in intensity in Hafley’s practices, with a focus on pushing each other to their limits. Linebacker Jordyn Brooks praised the new coach’s under-the-radar entrance, saying, ‘They just come in and work, put their head down.’ Hafley’s emphasis on fundamentals and technique has resonated with players, who are eager to improve their skills and contribute to the team’s success.

The Dolphins’ training camp will continue over the next several weeks, with the team opening preseason play against the Washington Commanders on August 14. Despite being projected to be among the worst teams in the NFL, the Dolphins are committed to improving their performance and challenging the ‘rebuild’ label.

Under Hafley’s leadership, the team is shifting its focus from individual success to team success and growth. The absence of the orange practice jersey, previously awarded to players with exceptional sessions, is a testament to this new approach. Wide receiver Malik Washington explained, ‘The emphasis is the team right now, and it’s us playing together.’

Hafley has spent time with different position groups throughout the off-season, and he plans to spend more time on the defensive side of the ball in training camp. The coach believes that fundamentals and technique are essential for the team’s success, saying, ‘I think the only thing you can rely on when things get hard are fundamentals and technique.’

The Dolphins’ commitment to technique and fundamentals is a refreshing change from the team’s previous approach. As the team continues to develop under Hafley’s guidance, fans can expect to see a more cohesive and determined team on the field.
