For years, India has been the world’s largest app download market, but one of its toughest places to make money. However, this is slowly changing as Indian consumers become increasingly willing to pay for premium apps, digital subscriptions, and other services.

According to a recent report by Sensor Tower, India’s mobile app market generated a record $345 million in consumer spending during the second quarter of this year, representing a 35% increase from the same period last year. This growth is being driven by the increasing adoption of digital payments, including India’s Unified Payments Interface (UPI) and digital wallets, which have reduced friction for in-app purchases.
The report highlights the significant growth in India’s app market, with the country emerging as one of the fastest-growing markets for app monetization globally. In contrast, Mexico’s app revenue grew by 30%, while Turkey’s saw a 25% increase. The United States, however, experienced a 3% decline in app revenue during the same period.
India’s app revenue per download has more than doubled over the past three and a half years, while quarterly app downloads have remained at around 6.3 billion since 2023. This trend suggests that India is no longer just the world’s largest app download market but is also emerging as a significant player in the app monetization space.
The growth in India’s app market is being driven by a range of factors, including the increasing adoption of digital payments, the growing acceptance of app-based subscriptions, and the rising demand for premium digital services. The report highlights the significant contribution of non-gaming apps to India’s app revenue, with these categories accounting for 68% of the country’s mobile app revenue in the first half of 2026.
Generative AI has emerged as one of the fastest-growing segments in India’s app market, with OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Anthropic’s Claude together accounting for nearly 83% of India’s AI app revenue in Q2. The report also notes the significant growth in streaming platforms, with Google One becoming India’s highest-grossing mobile app during the quarter.
App intelligence firm Appfigures also sees India’s app subscription market continuing to grow, although the pace has slowed after an AI-fueled surge over the past two years. The company estimates that ChatGPT generates around $60,000 a day in India and attracted approximately 1.8 million downloads over the past month, although this is down from roughly $80,000 a day last October.
The numbers are indeed staggering, and the growth in India’s app market is a testament to the country’s rapidly evolving mobile ecosystem. As Eve Chen, an insights analyst at Sensor Tower, notes, ‘We would describe India today as a rapidly evolving mobile market with a large user base and growing willingness to pay for digital services.’
The report highlights the significant potential for growth in India’s app market, with revenue per download still significantly lower than in more mature markets such as the United States and South Korea. Nonetheless, the trajectory of India’s app market is a positive trend that suggests significant room for long-term growth.
As the Indian app market continues to evolve, it will be interesting to see how the growth in app monetization and the increasing adoption of digital payments impact the broader ecosystem. One thing is certain, however: India is no longer just the world’s largest app download market, but is also emerging as a significant player in the app monetization space.
