Oil Spill Crisis Unfolds Off Oman’s Coast
An oil spill from a U.K.-sanctioned tanker, the Caroline Bezengi, has dramatically expanded, affecting a vast area off Oman’s coast. Satellite images reviewed by The Associated Press reveal the shocking extent of the spill, which now covers an estimated 150 square kilometers (58 square miles) of the Arabian Sea.
The oil spill, which originated from the 274-meter (899-foot) Suezmax tanker, has reached shorelines and is spreading far out to sea. According to Greenpeace Germany, the spill’s surface area has increased drastically, with satellite images from a day earlier indicating a massive expansion.
Greenpeace Germany’s Nina Noelle stated that the satellite images from Sunday showed an oil sheen spreading to the northeast from the grounded tanker. The affected area is part of the Arabian Sea reserve, a marine protected area and home to endangered petrels and the rare Arabian Sea humpback whale.
Wim Zwijnenburg, an environmental expert for PAX, noted that the oil sheen is a thin layer of oil that often evaporates depending on the type of crude oil and weather conditions. Thick black patches of oil have reached the southern and western shores of Qibliyah Island off Dhofar, Oman’s largest governorate.
The oil spill has raised serious concerns about the environmental threat posed by the stranded tanker. The U.K. government sanctioned the vessel for its involvement in activities that destabilize Ukraine or support the Russian government. The tanker is also sanctioned by the European Union, Canada, and Switzerland.
The tanker has been grounded since June, with reports of an explosion on board at the time. The crew reported the incident, but the AP was unable to independently confirm the reports. The tanker’s owners have been ordered by Oman’s Ministry of Transport, Communications and Information Technology to remove the ship and its cargo by July 23.
The oil spill has highlighted the dangers associated with Russia’s shadow fleet. Greenpeace Germany stated that the dramatic expansion of the spill underscores the serious and continuing environmental threat posed by the stranded tanker.
The affected area is home to a diverse range of wildlife, including endangered species. The oil spill has raised concerns about the long-term impact on the marine ecosystem and the potential consequences for local communities.
