Sony Signals Shift to Digital Gaming with Disc Production Discontinuation

In a significant move, Sony Interactive Entertainment has announced that physical disc production for new games on PlayStation consoles will cease in January 2028. This decision follows the trend of consumers increasingly preferring digital media over physical discs.

According to Sid Shuman, Senior Director, Sony Interactive Entertainment Content Communications, ‘In response to shifting trends in consumer preference, new games will be released on PlayStation Store and at retailers in digital formats only.’

The transition to digital-only formats will affect all new games released on PlayStation consoles after the January 2028 cut-off date. This means that consumers will no longer be able to purchase physical copies of games, and instead, will have to opt for digital downloads. Existing games that have already been released in disc format will not be affected by this change.

The decision has been met with mixed reactions from gamers and industry analysts. Piers Harding-Rolls, a games industry analyst at Ampere, has called the announcement ‘a watershed moment for the industry.’ He noted that console gaming is the last hold-out for physical media, and that physical product has been declining in importance.

Harding-Rolls pointed out that in 2013, only 13% of total full games unit sales for Sony consoles were digital, while by 2025, this number had risen to almost 80%. This shift in consumer preference has led Sony to adapt its business model to prioritize digital formats.

The company’s decision to discontinue physical disc production has sparked concerns from some gamers, who worry about the impact on game preservation, discoverability, and the ability to collect physical games. However, Sony remains committed to delivering a world-class gaming experience to its fans and is prioritizing its resources to drive innovation in digital gaming.

The move has been seen as a natural progression for the gaming industry, which has been shifting towards digital formats for several years. As consumer preferences continue to evolve, it’s likely that other console manufacturers will follow suit in the future.

Meanwhile, Sony has announced the closure of its PlayStation Store on the PS3 and Vita, beginning next month in certain countries. This move is seen as a further sign of the company’s commitment to digital gaming and its willingness to adapt to changing consumer trends.
