Netflix’s Impressive Emmy Showing

Netflix has made a significant impact at the 2024 Emmy Awards, with a total of 111 nominations across 34 titles. This impressive showing is a testament to the streamer’s commitment to producing high-quality content that resonates with audiences worldwide.

The nominations include 21 series that have scored multiple nominations, with ‘Beef’ leading the pack with an impressive 16 nominations. ‘The Diplomat’ follows closely behind with 9 nominations, further solidifying Netflix’s stronghold on the limited/anthology series genre.

Jinny Howe, Head of UCAN Scripted Series at Netflix, expressed her pride and excitement about the nominations. ‘I feel tremendously proud of the showing that we had. I think it just demonstrates a really great representation across such a variety of different types of shows and creators.’

Two Netflix series, ‘Beef’ and ‘The Diplomat’, have seen a significant increase in their Emmy nomination tally season-to-season. ‘Beef’ went from 13 to 16 nominations, while ‘The Diplomat’ jumped from 2 to 7 nominations for Season 3. Both series are nominated in the top series categories, with ‘Beef’ being a standout with its 16 nominations.

Howe highlighted the success of ‘The Diplomat’, which has been a critical darling despite not attracting wide audiences. ‘It just is testament to how strong the show is,’ she said. ‘As you know, we’ve been betting forward on that show every season because we believe in it, and we know that it’s just a really special and stellar show that Debora Cahn created.’

Another series that has seen significant growth in its nominations is ‘The Beast In Me’, which has 9 nominations. The show, starring Claire Danes and Matthew Rhys, is a true limited series that has been successful in ratings. Howe expressed her excitement about the show’s potential for future seasons, saying ‘I don’t have anything to confirm on that front today. I think right now we’re just focused on Season 1 and the nominations this morning.’

Netflix’s prestige push is also evident in its acquisition of high-end dramas. Two years ago, Howe brought in HBO executive Nora Skinner as VP, focused on elevated and prestige dramas. The slate of shows includes ‘Rabbit, Rabbit’, ‘The Corrections’, and ‘East of Eden’, all of which are in various stages of production.

Howe expressed her excitement about the upcoming shows, saying ‘Yes, her slate is underway. You know about these big titles we have with Rabbit, Rabbit, and we just made a big commitment on The Corrections; these things take some time to come together, but will be coming your way very soon.’

In conclusion, Netflix’s impressive Emmy showing is a testament to its commitment to producing high-quality content that resonates with audiences worldwide. With its prestige push and big buys, the streamer is solidifying its position as a leader in the entertainment industry.
