Warde Manuel’s Tenure in Jeopardy
Michigan athletics director Warde Manuel now finds himself in a precarious position as the university’s Board of Regents prepares to discuss the findings of an independent investigation into the culture of the Wolverines’ athletics department. The investigation, which was authorized by the university’s board in December, has been ongoing since the fallout of the Sherrone Moore scandal.
According to sources, the Board of Regents is scheduled to meet on Thursday to consider the findings of the investigation and potential responses. Manuel, who has been weighing his options, is reportedly considering retirement. A source close to the situation revealed that Manuel’s options include retirement, indicating that his tenure as athletics director may be coming to an end.
The investigation, which was conducted by the Chicago-based law firm Jenner & Block, was launched in response to the Sherrone Moore scandal. Moore, the former head coach of the Michigan football team, was fired in December after evidence of an inappropriate relationship between him and a subordinate staff member came to light. Moore was later arrested and charged with felony home invasion, stalking, and breaking and entering.
The Fallout of the Sherrone Moore Scandal
The Sherrone Moore scandal has sparked widespread outrage and calls for greater accountability within the athletics department. Paige Shiver, the staff member who was involved in the inappropriate relationship with Moore, has spoken out about the trauma she experienced during her time working with him. Shiver’s lawyers have stated that she believes she may not be the only person who experienced inappropriate, coercive, or predatory behavior from Moore during his two-year tenure as head coach.
The university’s response to the scandal has been criticized for being too little, too late. The investigation into Moore’s conduct was launched in December, but it was not until March that Shiver’s lawyers spoke out about the alleged abuse she suffered. The university’s handling of the situation has raised questions about the department’s broader awareness of Moore’s conduct and its failure to protect its employees.
Warde Manuel’s Legacy
Warde Manuel has been at the helm of the Michigan athletics department since 2016. During his tenure, he has managed more institutional turbulence than most athletic directors see in a career. He has navigated the department through a sign-stealing investigation, the arrest and firing of his football coach, a national basketball championship, a rejected private-equity bid, and an Amazon streaming deal outside the Big Ten’s media agreement. Manuel has stated that his goal as a leader is to provide steadiness in the wake of dealing with issues, but it remains to be seen whether he will be able to maintain his position amidst the current controversy.
Manuel’s average annual compensation is $1.9 million, and he signed a five-year contract extension through June 30, 2030, in December 2024. The university’s response to the investigation’s findings and Manuel’s future at the department remain uncertain.
In a statement, university president Domenico Grasso confirmed that the investigation would expand into an independent evaluation of culture, conduct, and procedures throughout the athletics department. Grasso stated that the school would ‘act swiftly’ if the investigation produced findings that warranted additional terminations. The university’s commitment to transparency and accountability has been called into question, and it remains to be seen how the situation will unfold.
