Denshattack! is a Thrilling Train Game that Redefines the Genre

In recent weeks, games on rails have experienced a resurgence in popularity, with Nintendo’s Star Fox remake paying homage to the tightly scripted and action-packed levels of the original Star Fox 64. Undercoders’ latest game, Denshattack!, follows a similar approach, but with a unique twist – instead of flying through space as an anthropomorphic fox, players control a train that tears through Japan’s vibrant landscapes.

However, describing Denshattack! as a ‘train game’ does it a disservice. This game is a rollercoaster ride of excitement, where players will fly, flip, spin, and grind their way through levels that are reminiscent of Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater, but with a speed and intensity that is unmatched by any other game in the genre.

The game’s visuals are a stunning representation of Japan, with bright and colorful environments that are meticulously crafted to provide an immersive experience. Players will tear through levels like a bullet, drift around corners, and leap off ramps to perform skateboarding-inspired stunts. As they progress through the game’s 10 worlds, they will unlock new abilities that turn them into a supercharged acrobat, allowing them to ride on graffiti-filled walls, loop around tunnels, catch wind currents to fly through the air, and even flip their gravity to drive upside down.

The game’s soundtrack is equally impressive, with an upbeat and catchy score that perfectly complements the on-rails gameplay. Players will feel like they are part of a high-speed action movie, with each level offering a unique and thrilling experience that is impossible to put down.

One of the key aspects of Denshattack!’s success is its use of on-rails gameplay. By removing the need for players to worry about navigation, the developers are able to focus on crafting levels that are packed with action and excitement. This approach also allows for a high degree of creativity, as players are able to respond to the twists and turns of the track in a variety of ways, from performing tricks and stunts to simply surviving the chaos that ensues.

However, as with any game that relies on repetition, Denshattack! can sometimes feel a little samey. Each region has the same general structure, with players tackling the same types of levels over and over again. Additionally, the game’s story is relatively lightweight, and players may find themselves mashing through it to get to the levels.

Despite these minor quibbles, Denshattack! is an absolute must-play for anyone who loves action-packed games. With its stunning visuals, catchy soundtrack, and expertly crafted levels, this game is a true masterpiece of the on-rails genre.

Denshattack! is available now on Nintendo Switch 2, PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X / S.
