A Wake-Up Call for the Evolution of AI

As an evolutionary scientist and the Founding Director of the Evolutionary Studies (EvoS) program at the State University of New York at New Paltz, I’ve had the privilege of exploring the intersection of science and society for over two decades. My program has consistently aimed to shed light on the human condition through the lens of Charles Darwin’s groundbreaking ideas. However, a recent incident has left me grappling with the unintended consequences of AI-generated content, specifically the racist and sexist undertones that can emerge from even the most well-intentioned uses of technology.

Last semester, a student group created a flyer for an event using Canva, a popular design platform that leverages AI algorithms. The flyer, which was meant to promote a community-oriented event, ended up perpetuating a racist and sexist narrative. The image, generated by Canva’s Magic Studio AI feature, portrayed evolution as a linear progression, with monkeys turning into apes and eventually a white man. This image was not only deeply problematic but also a stark reminder of the implicit racism and sexism that can be embedded in AI-generated content.

As I reflected on this incident, I realized that AI-generated content has the capacity to amplify racist and sexist worldviews, often unwittingly. This is particularly concerning in the context of evolution, where the concept of the ‘march of progress’ can be both inaccurate and dangerous. By perpetuating a linear and hierarchical view of evolution, we risk reinforcing racist and sexist ideologies that have no place in our society.

But what’s even more disturbing is that AI-generated content is not just a reflection of our biases; it’s also a product of them. As AI algorithms learn from existing content, they tend to perpetuate the same biases and prejudices that are present in the data they’re trained on. This means that AI-generated content can be a manifestation of the systemic racism and sexism that we’ve built into our society.

As we continue to rely on AI and related technologies, we must be aware of the potential risks and consequences. We need to recognize that AI-generated content is not a neutral or objective representation of reality but rather a reflection of our collective biases and prejudices. By acknowledging this, we can take steps to mitigate the impact of AI-generated content and promote a more inclusive and equitable society.

In the end, this incident has taught me a valuable lesson: that even the most well-intentioned uses of technology can have unintended consequences. As we move forward in this digital age, we must be mindful of the potential risks and consequences of AI-generated content and strive to create a more inclusive and equitable society.

Ultimately, it’s up to us to be mindful of these issues when utilizing modern technologies and AI content—in an effort to stamp out racism and sexism. Here is to a brighter future in which humans grab our own future by the reins. And not the robots.
