Rupert Grint’s Latest Horror Project: Nightborn
British actor Rupert Grint has recently starred in a new horror movie titled Nightborn, which premiered on Shudder. The film takes place in the Finnish woods and revolves around a new father, Jon, played by Grint, who is struggling to cope with the arrival of his newborn child, Kuura.
According to Grint, being a new father was a terrifying experience, and filming Nightborn brought back those memories. ‘Being a dad myself, it was very triggering, I think,’ Grint said in a recent Zoom interview. ‘It’s such a scary time, letting this creature into your house. It does sometimes feel like an alien. There’s lots of strange things you have to learn on the fly.’
Grint’s character, Jon, is a new father who is trying to navigate the challenges of parenthood. However, things take a dark turn when Kuura, the baby, begins to exhibit monstrous qualities. Grint’s portrayal of Jon’s struggles as a new father adds a layer of depth to the film.
The Inspiration Behind Nightborn
The story of Nightborn was inspired by writer-director Hanna Bergholm’s own experiences as a mother. ‘I find scary stuff in every project I do,’ Bergholm said. ‘I think that horror exists everywhere but in this genre, this was first.’ Bergholm’s inspiration for the film came from her observations about motherhood and the changes that occur in a woman’s body during pregnancy.
The character of Kuura, the baby, was named after the Finnish word for ‘frost.’ Bergholm wanted to explore the idea of a child being a force of nature, and the challenges that come with caring for a newborn. Kuura’s monstrous qualities are not just physical but also emotional, as he grows up and becomes increasingly difficult to care for.
The Cast and Crew of Nightborn
Seidi Haarla plays the role of Saga, Jon’s wife, in Nightborn. Haarla’s character is a mother who is struggling to cope with the arrival of her child. She is often at odds with Jon, who is trying to navigate the challenges of parenthood. The tension between the two characters adds a layer of depth to the film.
According to Haarla, the film is an exploration of motherhood and the challenges that come with it. ‘For me, it was an exploration of motherhood, maybe the shadow side of motherhood,’ Haarla said. ‘I tend to think that everything can be real maybe, but I felt it was a real exploration of motherhood and a mother/baby connection and bonding.’
The Making of Nightborn
The making of Nightborn was a challenging but rewarding experience for the cast and crew. Grint and Haarla spent weeks rehearsing the fight scenes between their characters, which added a layer of realism to the film. The animatronic model of Kuura was puppeted by five puppeteers, and the film’s special effects were impressive.
The film’s writer-director, Hanna Bergholm, said that the story was inspired by her own observations about motherhood and the changes that occur in a woman’s body during pregnancy. ‘You might say that the story’s also about how to face yourself as you are and with all your uncertainties and fears,’ Bergholm said.
