Okta Makes Strategic Acquisition to Enhance AI Security Capabilities

Okta, a leading identity management company, has announced its decision to acquire Permiso Security, a cutting-edge AI identity security startup. This strategic move aims to strengthen Okta’s position in the rapidly growing market of AI security, as enterprises increasingly deploy autonomous software across their operations.

The acquisition is valued at approximately $200 million and is structured as an almost all-cash deal, according to a source with knowledge of the transaction. Okta’s Chief Product Officer, Ely Kahn, emphasized the significance of this acquisition in a prepared statement, stating, ‘Permiso will extend Okta’s identity security fabric with proven identity threat detection and response capabilities, and an incredible threat research and security team that will advance Okta’s threat detection and prevention capabilities.’

The deal is expected to close in the third quarter of Okta’s fiscal 2027, subject to customary closing conditions. This acquisition marks a significant milestone in Okta’s expansion into the AI security market, as the company seeks to provide comprehensive identity management solutions to its clients.

Permiso Security, founded in 2022, specializes in developing software that helps security teams spot suspicious activity in cloud environments after users or applications have been granted access. The startup has recently expanded its platform to monitor AI agents and other machine identities, making it an attractive acquisition target for Okta. Permiso’s cutting-edge technology will enable Okta to provide more robust security solutions to its clients, protecting them against emerging threats in the AI security landscape.

In April, Permiso introduced SandyClaw, a platform designed to analyze AI agent skills in a sandboxed environment to identify malicious behavior before they are deployed. This innovative solution will be integrated into Okta’s identity security fabric, further enhancing the company’s capabilities in AI security.

The acquisition also brings Permiso’s talented team, including co-founders Paul Nguyen and Jason Martin, who have extensive experience in the security industry. Their expertise will be invaluable in advancing Okta’s threat detection and prevention capabilities.

Permiso has raised approximately $29 million to date, including an $18.5 million Series A round in April 2024 led by Altimeter Capital. The Series A valuation of about $80 million on a post-money basis highlights the growing recognition of Permiso’s potential in the AI security market.

Okta’s move to acquire Permiso reflects the company’s commitment to staying at the forefront of the rapidly evolving identity management market. By integrating Permiso’s cutting-edge technology and expertise, Okta is poised to provide more comprehensive and secure identity management solutions to its clients.
